
This is evident in the type of architecture, and the numerous windmills that have become symbolic of the Netherlands as a whole. Being situated on the North Sea, at the mouths of two rivers (the Rhine and Maas), constant drainage of water and the arrangement of dikes are required to prevent the area from flooding.

The area has historically featured a maritime culture, with most of the inhabited land being at or below sea level. Of course, Gouda is historically the most important, being the birthplace of the variety of cheese with the same name. The Netherlands encompasses of several cities: Arnhem, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and a handful of others.
